欧州の伝承に材を取った、東映動画（東映アニメーション）製作の世界名作ものアニメ映画。　　時は昔。森に迷い込んだヒルデブランド王国の王は、道標を授ける老婆の指示に従い、娘グレタを後妻の王妃に迎えた。だがグレタの正体は魔女。グレタは、夫の国王が今は亡きその先妻の遺児＝六人の王子とエリザ姫に深い愛情をいだいている事実に嫉妬。王子たちを呪いで白鳥に変えてしまう。王子たちを元に戻す方法。それはエリザが6年間、ただの一言も口を利かずに過ごすという過酷な試練だった……。　　原作はグリム童話とアンデルセン童話、世界的に有名な二大童話にも翻案されたヨーロッパではかなり有名な伝説。監督は、東映動画のTVアニメ諸作などで独特な演出を評価される西沢信孝が担当。脚本を執筆した隆巴は名優・仲代達矢の夫人であり、その仲代が所属する俳優座の面々も声の出演に参加している。
